The Crown and Kettle

Another Manchester pub well worth a visit. The Crown & Kettle was closed for 20 years but has thankfully been re-opened complete with its own brewery. Like the Marble Arch, which is only 10 minutes walk away, this is an architectural gem, as well as an exceptional watering hole. Its located at the 'far end' of Oldham Road.

Like all good pubs, the combination of good beer and bags of character is irresistible. While you're there take a bit of time to study the ceiling, its one of the most remarkable I've seen in any pub. According to the pub's website the 'splendid and ornate interior' is due to the fact that it was originally intended as a law court. This seems a bit unlikely to me as it's surely too small for a court, but who am I to complain? If you are drinking in the Northern Quarter - make sure this is on your itinerary!

The Bhurtpore Inn

What a gem this is! Its a bit out of the way, located in the village of Aston which is about halfway between Nantwich and Whitcurch, but well worth the visit. As far as the beers go its hard to know where to start. There are 11 real ales on tap and a fine selection of foreign beers as well, check out the Belgian beers on a visit.

The pub has a bit of a history, being named after a fort in India which was finally overcome by Lord Combermere, the pub being part of the Combermere estate. This may have something to do with the fact that the pub serves up excellent curries. So what more could you ask for ? Bags of character, an excellent range of beers and good curry. Nirvana does exist - just envy the locals, and don't miss it.

The Marble Arch

What can I say? It's a great Manchester pub and one of the best in the country. Worth visiting for its interior alone which is a Victorian gem with beautiful tiling throughout the main room, and the sloping mosaic floor adds extra character! People go on about the Philharmonic Dining Rooms in Liverpool, which is admittedly not to be missed, but I think this is better. There are some good real ales on tap too. Usually about a dozen or so, most of which come from the Marble's own brewery. The food is also good - if a little pricey.

My last visit was just before Christmas. Not the best time to go as the place was absolutely rammed but we still managed to find a table and get something to eat. Its a little bit out of the way, being on Rochdale Road near the CIS building but if you are on a pub crawl in the Northern Quarter its not to be missed.
